Building Language and Social Skills Through Pretend Role Play

My students need the Pretend and Play Market, a cash register, the Pet Vet Center and other materials for realistic dramatic play which will spin off amazing language and social skills development.

My Students

Think about going out to eat or shopping with your family. Think about the other families that you see around you. Do you see small children engaged with their families in language building? Or are they simply told to shush and handed a phone or tablet?

Many of our young children are sped through their formative years, spending more time with technology than with actual personal interaction.

This description is accurate for many of my kindergarten students who need support building both academic and social language. We are kindergarten English Language Learners in a Title I school where everyone qualifies for free lunch. My students come from many different countries speaking many different languages. We need every opportunity to build language skills, social skills, and self-regulation skills so that we can fully integrate into today's global society.

My Project

Using these dramatic play centers and kits, the children will be able to practice many valuable skills such as taking turns, creating and enforcing rules during play, self-regulation and coping strategies, creativity, critical thinking, executive planning, sharing, and both academic and social language. We need the Pretend and Play Market, a cash register, the Pet Vet Center and other materials.

Young children learn best through play and interaction with one another.

Through interaction with each other and mimicry of what they see played out every day by their adult role models (parents, caregivers, teachers, and even strangers), the children will build their interpersonal skills in a way that their brains crave. Students will make meaningful connections to one another and their environment. These connections will serve to solidify the learning and foster its continued development as they practice.
