My Students

My students come in excited and ready to be creative! I face a huge challenge by not having some of the essential tools for my young students. Yes, my classroom is missing BLOCKS!!!

My young students have diverse backgrounds.

My school is not a Title 1 school currently, but we have many needs that are critical to meet for our students. Some of the children live in apartments where the families struggle to provide all the basic needs and some live in large, beautiful homes that have a vast amount of learning experiences available to them. No matter the background, they all have one thing in common. The all need love, support and nurturing from the community.

My Project

Blocks is a center that involves the whole child. There are physical characteristics due to the actual process of picking up, carrying, and building of the blocks. There is the intellectual aspect because of the thought process going into the creation of the architecture. Then there is the social skill aspect of conversing with neighbors, working around and with others, and building what they know. Finally, there is an emotional aspect of creating something unique. The block center is an open-ended process. A child can't take the finished product of a block center home, so in that way it frees a child to "experiment, plan, change, negotiate, and enjoy without the pressure of an end product." By having traffic signs, cars, animals, and books in the block center will provide a print rich environment for my students.

By donating to my project, the children can learn many concepts, especially math concepts such as area, size, space, and shapes through block play.

Playing with blocks provides an excellent opportunity for social and physical development and enhances creativity. My students need to be creative and inspired! I can just imagine their faces filled with excitement when they see the castle blocks, the wooden vehicles and traffic signs, along with the different ethnic play figures.
