Building Knowledge While Building Community

My Students

I teach a fun, active group of 25 second graders. They love to learn and work together. In second grade, we learn a lot of new skills every day. These students are eager to learn and apply their skills every day!

My students are on a variety of levels in the classroom.

They need engaging ways to practice skills they are missing. My students that are reading above level, need engaging ways to challenge their brains!

They need new and exciting experiences to keep them engaged in our curriculum. I like to provide them with experiences that will immerse them in the learning and teach them about the world we live in.

My Project

Each morning, my students come in and come right to our current classroom carpet. We sing our class song, and do all of our morning tasks. Then, we do our morning meeting. Morning Meeting is the place where we build community. The students greet each other and have a turn to share. This is many students favorite part of the day. It helps us to build a strong classroom community. We also gather on the carpet many times during the day for instruction. The students are learning and are easily able to communicate with their peers and share new ideas.

I want my students to feel safe and welcome at school.

A new classroom rug will brighten the classroom environment and help the students feel welcome and safe. It would give our classroom a more home-like feel.

Our current classroom rug is not helping the classroom environment. It is starting to fall apart. We also don't all fit on our rug. Many students are sitting outside of our morning meeting circle or sitting off the carpet during instruction. This new rug would help every student have a place. Every student would feel welcome and would have a place to sit. It would help every student feel like they are a part of our classroom every day. They would love coming to a new, welcoming rug every morning. When it is time for instruction on the rug, they would come eagerly. This would give us a great place to work on essential skills in math and literacy.
