My Students

My students all come from a poverty ridden part of Jacksonville. They all receive free lunch and many people just seem to give up on them. I will do no such thing. I want them to have the same experiences, the same education, and the same resources as the best schools in the city. No child should have to suffer in the classroom because they do not have what others do. Aside from teaching, I believe that it is my role to provide for my students in any way that I possibly can.

My Project

Having solid background knowledge is essential to doing well in school. It is very difficult for a student to comprehend a nonfiction article about the science of roller coasters and how force and motion propel the ride when they have no idea what a roller coaster is. You would think that most kids would have a pretty good understand of roller coasters but if you have never been on one, seen one, or heard of one, you would be pretty lost. We take for granted what we experienced in our lives and assume that our students have as well when that is not always the case.

Our students do not have the same background knowledge that other students do and it is impeding their reading comprehension.

Through using these materials, I would like to increase their background knowledge and thus help increase their comprehension of nonfiction texts especially. It will also help in their ability to be able to compare and contrast two texts. Having varied levels of text will better meet the needs of all of my students.
