Building Kids Confidence and Self-Efficacy Through Social Emotional Learning
Help me give my students support to grow their confidence in the classroom and on the playground while boosting their own capacities in self-management and building peer relationships.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are lacking opportunities for building their social emotional learning in self-regulation and managing peer relationships. They are an amazing group of kids that need guidance and support in identifying their emotions, self-managing, resolving conflict and focusing their efforts for achievement in academics that will grow their confidence as learners. I have begun by introducing the Zones of Regulation SEL supports and our school has an amazing Problem Solving Guide for students to use directly with their peers to support resolving conflict. The visual supports in the classroom for the Zones of Regulation will be helpful resources for students to reference as they build their skills. The playground set will provide peers healthy opportunities to manage themselves in self-directed group play at recess during which they will use these SEL skills in a supported setting. The Writing Without Tears curriculum will provide my students with the support and practice they likely missed during earlier grades. Their handwriting has become an obstacle for them to communicate their thinking and complete assignments. The skills and strategies for becoming a skilled writer is instruction that is already included in our curriculum but the actual handwriting of the assignments has left many students feeling like completing assignments is an insurmountable challenge. Lacking this very necessary skill makes it difficult for students to concentrate on growing as writers and consistently upsets many students making them feel behind and that they just can’t do it. This program will increase their self-efficacy by building confidence through increased capacity.
