Building Inclusive Classrooms From the Ground Up

My Project

My students are curious, creative, and capable learners who shine when given the right tools and supports. They are elementary students receiving special education services in a Title I school, and many use alternative communication methods such as AAC devices, gestures, or visuals. They communicate in unique and powerful ways, and they thrive in classrooms that honor their needs, celebrate their strengths, and provide multiple ways to engage with learning.

This project will help create a classroom where every student is supported in how they learn, move, and communicate.

As my co-teacher and I move into separate classrooms after three years of sharing materials, we’re working to ensure both spaces are fully equipped for our students’ success. I’m requesting flexible seating (like scoop chairs, a beanbag, a body pillow, and a cube chair) to support regulation and comfort; LED lights to signal transitions; and a laminator with laminating sheets to create reusable visual and communication supports. Plastic bins and folders will help us keep student materials organized and accessible. With these tools, I’ll be able to design a classroom where students feel safe, understood, and ready to thrive.
