Building Horticultural Skills for Students With Autism and Communication Disorders

Help me give my students the opportunity to advance functional and vocational training, while increasing communication and language skills, in integrated autism programs. These provide adapted opportunities for building life and personal skills in a horticultural classroom setting.

My Project

The students in the center based autism, and integrated learning Programs have spent the last year learning about propagating succulent plants. I would like to give them the opportunity to advance their skills by giving them vocational and functional opportunities to expand their horticulture and botany experiences by planting from seed. I am also working to increase their communication skills by giving opportunities for specific directions and vocabulary development, hence the different colors of watering cans and shovels. Some students have difficulty with watering cans that do not have a completely open top, therefore, I have ordered The specifically in order to provide a less frustrating opportunity for kids with limited physical control to be successful in the greenhouse setting.

As a speech language pathologist, my main goal is to improve receptive and expressive language, skills, communication, skills, and partnering with typical peers in a unified classroom setting.

This gives opportunities for students with disabilities to experience working alongside Neuro typical peers. More importantly, it gives Neurotypical peers, the experience of working and learning to help kids with autism and other learning differences become successful.

Since this is a program that was started last year with funding, we already have some supplies on hand. The most expensive part of any gardening or Greenhouse work is the purchase of potting soil. Dirt isn’t cheap. I realize a lot of this money goes towards purchasing soil, and Pete Maas, but it is a good experience for all the students to learn how to mix soil, and what is best for what plant.

Thank you for the opportunity. I am always looking for ways to increase productivity of students with different learning styles and needs.
