I teach at an elementary school in Hilo, Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to economic backgrounds.
I'll be moving from a 3rd grade classroom to 2nd grade classroom next school year.
Our school has been using a state mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are very limited. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures.
Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things!
My Project
Building positive relationships is the key to academic success as well as keeping our body and mind healthy! These board games, STEM materials and Lego sets will be used to promote and foster cooperative play/learning.
My students will be learning to share, take turns and complement one another through cooperative play time.
These games will be used during indoor recess, "Fun Friday", and math and STEM activities. My students will enjoy learning and playing with these fun, engaging activities. Legos are always a favorite in my classroom and it's an effective way of getting students to work as a team!
More than half of students from low‑income households
