Building Healthy Bodies and Healthy Brains for the Future

My students need equipment such as hula hoops, falling sticks and pinnies for play which will, not only keep them healthy, but allow them to acquire skills that will set them up for success the rest of their lives.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from an area of low income, and so, many of them struggle with additional stresses and hardships. My first year here was a wake-up call to the difficulties that many children face.

I work at a Title 1 school where free breakfast is served and many students are on free or reduced lunch.

My heart is saddened by the circumstances of some of my students and yet, to see them come to school eager to learn and show kindness to those around them makes me glad, every day, to have the privilege of being part of their lives. I want the best for these children. It is my strong desire that every one of them have what they need to get a good education and succeed in life.

My Project

These materials will make a difference for the entire school. Just last week I was teaching a new game to my third graders, involving building "castles" with hula hoops. Many were excited to play the new game, but some simply wanted to play with the hula hoops. The problem: We only had enough hoops for the game. I was frustrated that we didn't have enough materials for all our students. There are often other students who resort to simply sitting during recess because they are uninterested in team sports or competitive games. Materials such as the falling sticks challenge and 4 person Stride-R will provide these students with alternatives that will fit their individual personalities while building soft skills and keeping them moving. The hula hoops and clips will provide the option for students to increase their hula hooping skills or join together and build obstacle courses. Providing opportunities for the students I work with to release their energy and stress during their recess, in a safe and healthy way, will not only increase their joy and decrease behavioral issues, but help them to be more engaged and successful in the classroom.

Giving low-income students access to materials for an active and safe recess experience will set them up for success in their classroom now and, thus, the rest of their lives.

Studies have shown that active children can learn much during their time in play. This time needs to be an opportunity for our children to learn teamwork, good sportsmanship, hand-eye coordination, cooperation, compassion, focus, communication, brainstorming skills... and so much more.

Thank you for helping our students.
