My goal, as a teacher, is to provide the best learning environment for my students. My school is very supportive in all that I do, but does not have the funds to get new supplies for the students. These students, who come from a high-poverty area, come to school to learn new things and have experiences that they might not be able to at home.
I work with 4th and 5th grade students with Emotional Disabilities.
I am so fortunate to have such a great group of students. Although my students face their own challenges everyday, they never fail to try their best in any situation.
My Project
My students struggle with different kinds of emotional disabilities. Many of them do not know how to communicate effectively and therefore have a hard time calming themselves down when they become upset.
Incorporating yoga into these emotionally disturbed students will teach them skills to self-regulate through the combination of breath and movement.
We have been learning basic yoga skills for a while and it is an understatement to describe the impact that yoga has already had in their lives. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources, we have been practicing yoga on the floor. Now, we only need mats to help make their practice that much better.
Yoga is a tool they look forward to learning each day. I have already noticed a difference in the time spent after yoga is finished in their attitudes and behavior. With these resources, we will have the ability to practice more and develop their emotional and physical skills.
