Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most mornings, eager faces walk along the sidewalk beaming with pride. "I have something for you, Mrs. L!" Their precious hands open and drop rocks into my open palm. Year after year, when my students discover I am a rock nerd, they strive to help build our classroom rock collection. The eagerness never subsides!

My students come from a very high poverty area.

Concrete mixed with gravel are about as extravagant as it comes as far as their experience with rocks.

Parents are working hard to provide for them. Our school is doing everything it can to meet our students needs but money is tight all over and corners are cut...unfortunately this means limited supplies...

My Project

Providing students with hands-on activities is proven to increase their comprehension and help them to retain knowledge! If our project is funded, you would be directly responsible for putting tools into my students hands that will affect them for a lifetime. Scientific discovery through rocks and minerals will lead to questioning, higher level writing, and increase vocabulary in a highly impoverished area where English Language Learners need authentic learning opportunities. Please help us!

We have no other way to get these materials.

It would mean the world to us if you could find it in your heart to empower us to succeed in our futures with this small gift. I know this seems like a small thing but really, you would be making such a huge impact by giving us the gift of rocks and minerals. I cannot even begin to explain how much conversation these items spark in a classroom thus impacting every student in some way.
