Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you built your first Lego craft? Or how you felt when you built a large city with blocks? Those are the experiences I would like my students to know and love.

Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area of California that is predominantly Spanish-speaking.

It is an area in which violence occurs daily and its proximity to oil refineries cause health issues. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school. The students in my class are obviously a part of this group and they love to get time to explore and create all on their own.

My Project

The resources I'm requesting are a variety of blocks in different forms which will allow the children to explore building and creating in various ways and modes. With these materials the children will be able to use their imagination to create objects or places in which they can utilize. Currently we have tubs of math manipulatives which they use to create with but it is limited. Block play (the use of the variety of blocks) gives children the opportunity to explore freely using their imaginations while developing their math, science, cognitive, social, and language skills. Some examples of what skills they will develop through this type of play are the law of gravity, properties of matter, negotiation, cooperation, symbolic thinking, problem solving, and so much more! Learning these skills will help my students as they grow older to become more productive members of society and gives them an advantage over the circumstances they are being raised in.

As children grow and learn they will be able to utilize these very necessary skills that they will be gaining through block play.

It will permeate every aspect of their lives. If they are able to build these foundational skills now they will be more successful when faced with difficult problems in their futures by utilizing problem solving skills, negotiation and cooperation skills and even symbolic thinking. It gives them the ability to think outside the box!
