My students need to build their fluency skills by reading more. We need a building fluency card band, and more.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income/high poverty, urban school district. They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and ninety-nine percent receive a free lunch and breakfast.
My students are seventy percent Hispanic and thirty percent African-American.
The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.
Our school is very limited when it comes to distributing resources. We would like to do more to provide our children with the supplies they need, but our school budget crisis makes this difficult.
My Project
These materials will definitely help my students reach their academic goals. The Building Fluency Card bank makes it easy for students to practice oral reading skills- boosting speed, accuracy and word recognition as they go!
Students will partner up and dive deep into these fluency challenges!
The cards feature fiction, nonfiction and poetry passages-all with a word count at the end of each line. Children will use the included timers to read aloud for one minute, then they record the number of words they've read correctly. Students will have a choice of 80 plus cards at 10 different reading levels. This will allow them to move up levels at their own pace.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
