My Students
My second grade students come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all desire the same thing, the chance to learn something new everyday! "What are we learning today?" is a phrase heard often and they are always excited to try new things and then share what they have learned with others.
My students come from varied backgrounds, but the majority are from low income families.
My school works hard to provide resources for families and reaches out to our community with special activities to promote math and literacy as well as fun experiences like movie nights or the spring carnival. Many families struggle to provide for their children, but learning is a high priority. My student's love for learning is often challenged by their lack of resources. This should never be an obstacle facing a child.
My Project
The materials needed in our classroom will allow my students to improve their reading accuracy, fluency, expression, and comprehension through targeted small-group learning experiences. My second graders love working in small groups or with a partner. They are able to encourage each other and work on reading skills with exciting and interesting books and materials. These materials would provide my students with a variety of high interest stories and passages to read independently or with a partner, allow them to boost word recognition, accuracy, time their speed and track their progress. The Reader's Theater Partner Scripts would encourage students build fluency and comprehension, as well as use expression and practice performing in front of others. The leveled read-a-long books with CDs will give my students great models for expressive reading and encourage them to become enthusiastic readers.
My students love to learn.
They can't wait to try new things and are excited and eager to begin each day. My students enjoy tracking their progress and love to see how they are improving and meeting their goals. These materials would give my students endless opportunities to read independently, with a partner, or in small groups. The small group learning activities would help them build on the necessary reading skills needed for success not only in second grade but throughout their lives.
