The students in the classroom are learners with special needs.
They qualify to receive special services in a preschool setting to help prepare them for their future school career.
Many of the students come from a low income background. They haven't had a typical childhood with the challenges they face. This classroom provides a safe environment for them where they can learn and grow. Preschool is a place to learn many skills before entering into the big, demanding world of elementary school. For those with special needs, the day is filled with challenges that exceed your typical child's. All of the students face developmental delays. This affects their ability to do day-to-day activities that children their age can independently do.
My Project
I need new, exciting, tools to help students engage in activities to promote their fine motor skill growth. Students need to build strength and skills to help them develop into strong students. Fine motor skills are skills that involve a use of the small muscles which control the hand, fingers and thumb. When a child is able to develop these skills, they are able to complete important tasks such as writing, feeding oneself, buttoning and zippering
I need fine motor skill materials that will help students build strength in their hands, all while keeping them engaged and excited about learning.
Students enjoy building and creating, allowing their imaginations to run wild. They will use the Crazy Shapes Magnetic Building Set, Magnetic Designer, Soft & Safe Flexi Blocks, Vehicle Building Engineering Center, ZigZag Blocks - Starter Set, Translucent Imagination Builders and Magna-Tiles® - Starter Set to do so. Through play using these tools, their small hand muscles will strengthen, helping support fine motor skills. Also, using their imagination through building and play ultimately helps support building their language skills as well.
Student will use the Snap & Pop Beads, Motor Links, as well as the other tools to take apart and put things together. This will help strengthen their hands that will help them build skills they need for writing, as well as daily living skills such as dressing.
The best way for kids to learn is to have them enjoy what they are doing. Through play, they will build essential skills for life and school.
