Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am starting a K/First specialized program for students with moderate to severe needs in a school that serves approximately ninety percent Latino students. The program serves students with autism and intellectual disability. In addition to barriers due to their disabilities, many of my students also encounter barriers resulting from language development and socioeconomic status. My program is designed to provide students with meaningful and engaging hands-on learning experiences that will keep my students excited to learn new things.

I am very excited to start a specialized program for students with moderate to severe education needs.

Although this is a very exiting experience, it is also a challenging one. Starting a new program means we have very limited resources. As a special education teacher, I need to ensure that I deliver excellent instruction in math, reading, writing and life skills with the limited resources and materials available.

My Project

My students will be starting a unit on transportation. Using the STEM kits will provide them with the opportunity to apply and showcase their knowledge and creativity. What better way than using hands-on, engineering and problem-solving skills with the Design and Build Engineering Centers to showcase their knowledge?

Building roller coasters, vehicles and bridges will be such fun and highly engaging ways to practice important lifelong skills and demonstrate their knowledge of the engineering behind ancient and modern transportation.

These STEM centers will provide my students with the opportunity to explore, discover and create concrete examples of the information they are learning. They will also have the opportunity to develop planning strategies with the Magnetic Stand-up Whiteboard.
