My students need 13 Hurricane Song and 13 A Long Walk to Water books to enhance science content with real world examples of natural occurrences impacting humans.
Some of my students have not yet discovered the connection between literature and science content. This could be the year that students make the emotional leap into science literature.
My students are 9th through 12th grade science and technology explorers.
My students attend a small school in a rural area. Most of my students are sons and daughters of ranchers. They are hardworking, dedicated, and curious about the world around them. They love enhancing their learning with new materials and technologies. They are self-managers of their learning as they are 1:1 with HP Streams and do science in a blended-gamified learning environment.
My Project
The books Hurricane Song by Paul Volponi and A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park will introduce common themes such as overcoming adversity, poverty, determination, and hope; all embedded within stories of Hurricane Katrina and water scarcity in Sudan. Students will work in book groups to analyze science events in the novels focusing on the human element. My students will participate in small group and moral reasoning discussions, blogging, and complete a paper focusing on controversial topics addressed in the books.
The donation of these juvenile novels would help students emotionally connect science content to real-world science events.
Including these novels in my classroom would help my students' gain environmental perspective, and an understanding of the impact of natural occurrences on humans around the world.
