Building Engagement by Building History

My Students

My students are your prototypical middle school students. They love to learn (even if they won't admit to it), and they love to have fun (even when they are not supposed to). My students love to learn about the world and are consistently seeking to expand their horizons beyond the four walls of our classroom and the confines of our school. They love to learn and are constantly asking questions about the world around them.

More than 40% of the students at our school come from low-income households.

A further 11% of students are classified as English Language Learners. Nearly 44% of the school identifies as persons of color. Overall the students from our school are a very diverse crowd representative of the neighborhoods in which they come from. Our school serves over 1,500 students who are eager to learn about new and exciting perspectives.

My Project

World history is full of monumental architecture. The Roman's love of games gave us the Colosseum. The Muslim's love of math gave us the ethereal beauty of geometric patterns. The West African griots and the Chinese Terracotta Army. The endless pyramids of Central America and the perfect stone working of the Inca. With so much history of the world present in these places, we would absolutely be remiss if we stuck with only looking at them.

To fully engage students we must give them the opportunity to learn not only with their eyes but with their hands.

We need to challenge students to do as well as to learn. For we learn by doing just as well as we learn by other means. By providing these LEGO basics I will be able to challenge my students to create the monumental architecture of the world as we learn about those cultures. Through design challenges, I will have students build as many places, ideas, and items as possible from our learning. To do this on a whole class scale will require thousands of LEGO bricks. My hope is to fund these LEGOs and get my kids building as soon as possible.
