Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I serve over four hundred students at a Title One elementary school, where many of our learners face significant challenges, both academically and emotionally.

Our school community has seen a high increase in behavioral needs and emotional dysregulation.

My role as the school’s Behavior TOSA is to support both students and staff in creating safe, inclusive environments where every child can thrive.

We’ve already implemented six schoolwide SEL bundles using the powerful Little Spot curriculum, and the response has been incredible. Teachers are actively engaging students in lessons about emotions, empathy, and self-regulation, but we’re ready to go a step further

This project will provide a full set of Little Spot Mini Plushies for each classroom. These plushies represent various feelings like sadness, anger, love, confidence, and calm, and help students externalize and identify what they’re experiencing. When students are dysregulated, holding or choosing a plushie helps them communicate their needs, especially when they don’t yet have the words.

By ensuring each classroom has its own set, teachers cannot only use the plushies as hands-on teaching tools during SEL lessons, but also reinforce those lessons throughout the day in real-time situations. Students will be empowered to choose a plushie that represents how they feel and take ownership of their emotions in a safe, supported way.

Having consistent, familiar SEL tools like these plushies available in every classroom, creates a sense of emotional safety. Instead waiting for support, students can start calming themselves down with tools they know and recognize. These plushies reinforce and bring to life the social-emotional learning lessons teachers have already been teaching, helping students make real-time emotional connections. This project will give every child the chance to self-regulate in the moment and grow their emotional vocabulary and resilience, critical skills for both learning and life.
