Building Critical Thinking Through Multiple Perspectives.

My students need books like "A People's History of the United States" and a "Patriot's History of the United States" in order to compare contrasting perspectives.

My Students

How do we create well rounded critical thinkers? By giving them multiple perspectives! In today's media driven world, it's easy to get caught up in one perspective or opinion without looking at the whole picture and that is what I want my students to be able to do.

100% of my students are minorities who deal with gangs, drugs, and violence on a daily basis.

School is not a punishment, but an escape from the problems of our troubled city. Despite the troubles our students face on a daily basis on their way to school in the morning or on their way home after school, their bright faces and hopeful smiles keep our school motivated and thriving. Never will you meet students with so little material but so much perseverance and hope. Thanks to these young minds, our school has become a safe haven for some and a beacon of hope for many more who now believe they may go to college. Walking down the hall you will see the ex-gang banger or the former tagger... did I mention they have 3.0 GPA now? Our students drive our teachers and keep us coming back for more. I can imagine teaching no where else and with no other group of students.

My Project

A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn is an incredible book that offers a critical perspective that my students can connect with. Even Howard Zinn's critical account however, is only one perspective and students should be exposed to alternative perspectives as offered by a Patriots History. Students will be able to contrast varying perspectives and formulate robust arguments that draw from different sources. Having these texts in graphic novel format will also help more students gain access to the content we cover in class. The graffiti books are meant to inspire some of my students who have shown interest in harnessing their art skills in graffiti in a more appropriate manner.

With the financial problems of our schools, enrichment resources that truly build critical thinking skills are becoming more and more scarce.

More and more, teachers have had to rely on outdated text books that only offer one limited viewpoint. I truly believe that these resources will help my students gain a deeper understanding of history and help prepare them for higher education in today's world. Thank you.
