Building Creative Collaboration Through The Outsiders Novel Study
My students need two class sets of the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton to develop skills as independent readers, critical thinkers, and collaborative work partners.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an energetic group of bilingual and special education 7th-grade students. At W.H.H. Elementary, teachers and staff value each student as a whole person. Their interests, backgrounds, struggles, and successes - both in school and in the community - are what make our school a more unique and special place. The students and staff value diversity of all people and strive for achievement in all that we do. My students are budding athletes, world travelers, mathematicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, authors, musicians... They are our future, and I want to give them a great start to their journey of life-long learning.
My Project
The 63 copies of the novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton will be used in the classroom for novel study. Students will read the books through a combination of group reading, partner reading, and individual reading, as well as listening to chapters read aloud. Students will analyze characters, plot, and setting in order to develop a deeper understanding of how the lives of teenagers in the 1960s were similar and different than teenagers living in today's world. By reading the novel and discussing their thoughts and feelings with their peers and working on creative projects related to the novel, students will learn discussion strategies and collaborative work strategies.
