Building Confidence in Math Through Student-Led, Hands-on Practice

My Students

The students I interact with on a daily basis are always ready for the next challenge. They can be bull-headed, arrogant, prideful to a fault, and definitely confrontational but, as I have learned the hard way, this only makes them more capable of solving problems in unique ways. I have really been forced to step up my game as a teacher to meet them at their level!

My students can be the change we want to see in this world, we just need to show that we believe in them and give them the space to shine!

I was constantly warned away from taking a job teaching in an under-served, urban school. This fear was worsened when I started reading some statistics that came from my school district and my school specifically. However, my students have proven all of these accusations wrong. They are ready to take their learning to the next level and they deserve everything this world has to offer.

My Project

Manipulatives, cooperative learning, self-paced, and exploratory learning are all hot topics in the world of mathematics and I am starting to see why! Towards the end of last school year, I began to use more manipulatives and the Kagan cooperative learning. The change in my students was immediate and dramatic.

The lightbulb moment showed on every face in the room, from the high-achievers to the sleep-through-every-class students.

There is no process I am more excited to incorporate than these Montessori-styled lessons that put students in the driver's seat of their education.

The workbooks I have requested are well-known for great review material that grows in complexity, mixing in previously mastered material for spiral review. The Kagan Cooperative learning combines exploratory, group learning with student-led reviews that foster a strong learning community while building confidence in students. Last, I have included manipulative materials that will allow students to get hands-on learning and experience.
