This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have taught first grade for three years and am now moving to third grade. I know that students at this age are becoming more independent in their reading and work skills. This also includes more difficult levels of reading comprehension. Since the majority of our students are English Language Learners, reading comprehension is especially difficult for this population. Since my class consists of students from various backgrounds, experiences, and levels, I plan to teach reading in small groups (literature circles) so that students are reading material at their reading level and they are involved in learning activities with peers in the same reading level.
Since I teach in a high poverty area, many students do not have the resources at home to read books at their own level. I would like to provide these books for them to read in class and at home. Through this experience, I believe students will become more motivated to read and will gain more background knowledge in our units of study.
The literature circles I plan to implement will help students expand their reading skills as well as exercise their leadership abilities in leading their own learning circles. I also chose books that correspond to the units we study and this will help them participate in classroom discussions and perform better on writing assessments. Your generosity can help these students become more independent, involved learners.
