My Students

My classroom is a Moderate Developmentally Delayed self contained classroom. We are made up of 3rd-5th graders . Since I serve students from all over our county, my class majority lives below the poverty line. My students are more than my students they are my family. Right now, we are a class of 9 special needs students. We have a variety of needs. (Down's Syndrome, Autism, Developmentally delayed etc...) Or goal, is to grow into functional adults within our community. We raise awareness and understanding for special needs people while learning the academic basics.

My Project

Our classroom is made up of Moderately Intellectually Delayed Special needs students at the Elementary school level. We have students with Down's Syndrome, Autism and other areas of delay. At the beginning of the school year, we moved to a new school. Our new school has never housed a Special Needs classroom. In order to introduce ourselves to a new school, we created a Partner's Club. The Partner's Club consists of General Ed. students who donate their Recess, PE or Lunch time to spend in the Special Needs classroom. The Partners help our students with academics, as well as social skills.

Through this project General Ed students will experience many character traits, such as, Love, Acceptance, Tolerance, Understanding, Compassion and Friendship.

In order to promote meaningful interactions among the students, we are in need of some outdoor equipment. Currently, we are building a play area for our students and partners to interact. Our goal is to have a safe outdoor area for the ALL students. By adding this equipment to our new play area, we can create new relationships with our Partners. During our Recess time, we work on motor skills and turn taking but also, we're learning to be friends. By having balls and various equipment, interactions and play becomes easier and natural for all students. It builds a sense of unity between the gen ed. students and special needs children.
