Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line and rely on our free meal plan for their child's breakfast and lunch.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science and math. We incorporate technology through the use of iPad apps, and we learn beginning engineering concepts through the use of building blocks and other manipulatives. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.
My Project
Every year my students participate in a unit study on animals. This year, as a culmination to this unit study, I would like to take my students to visit the Moorpark College EATM program.
The EATM program houses wild animals rescued from the wild, and from homes in which they had been kept as pets.
Many of these animals arrive injured and in need of medical care. They are not able to be released into the wild due to their injuries and lack of survival skills. Students from all over the world enroll in the EATM program to learn how to care for the animals and become educated on how to maintain the animals' habitats so their species will continue to thrive in the wild.
My students will get to see and touch the animals up close. They will also get to listen to an educational talk about how to care for animals in the wild, and what they can do at home with their families to help make the world a better place for animals and living things. Back at school, we build on this experience as we read stories that help build compassion towards all animals.
This trip will be a wonderful experience that our students will never forget! Your donation will help to provide the needed bus transportation and admission tickets. Thank you for supporting my students as we seek to develop compassion for our animal friends!
