My Project
Using building blocks, my students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person by participating in collaborative projects that require them to consider diverse perspectives. For instance, they might be tasked with designing a community space that accommodates individuals with different needs, such as ramps for wheelchairs or sensory-friendly areas for those with sensory sensitivities. This exercise will prompt them to think about the challenges others face and to empathize with their experiences. By working together and discussing the needs of different community members, students will gain a broader understanding of the world and develop the ability to empathize with others.
To help students learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others, these projects will focus on creating solutions that address real-world problems.
For example, students might build shelters for those affected by natural disasters or design playgrounds that are inclusive for all children. To measure success in their understanding of compassion, I will use a combination of observational assessments, reflective discussions, and evaluations of their projects. Observations during group work will reveal how students collaborate and consider each other’s perspectives. Reflective discussions will provide insights into their thought processes and empathetic considerations. The final projects will be evaluated on their effectiveness and inclusivity, demonstrating the students' ability to translate empathy into tangible solutions for alleviating suffering.
