My Students
Over the past few weeks, our library has undergone a transformation as part of our school's commitment to becoming "Future Ready."
Our middle school students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, with over 60% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
We have 30 different languages spoken by our ethnically diverse student population. Our students come from every continent on Earth except Antarctica. We have students who compete with the highest-achieving students in the state, right alongside students who read several years below their grade level. We have students who live in beautiful homes sitting next to students who don't have a home to call their own.
The tie that binds our students together is that they all want to succeed. They have big dreams and lofty goals. We want to give every student the skills to turn those dreams into reality.
My Project
Our state's Department of Education "STEM Education Plan" calls for an increase in "access to high quality out-of-school STEM-CTE learning opportunities that inspire student interest" and a similar increase in "rich early learning environments for historically underserved and underrepresented families." This project will provide the ability for students to safely travel home with a variety of STEM project materials, allowing our students to continue exploration and learning at home with their families.
This project will provide STEM opportunities in the homes of our students in a way never previously possible for many of our families.
With more than 60% of the students in our school qualifying for free or reduced lunch, many of our families simply can't afford to provide these STEM opportunities in the home.
This project will provide our students the ability to continue STEM exploration and learning at home by providing rich STEM opportunities for all of our students:
• SparkFun Inventor kits will help students build basic computer programming skills
• The 3Doodler pen will help students blend art and science through 3D design exploration
• Minecraft Stop Motion Movie Creator kits will capitalize on students' interest in Minecraft with a focused blending of technology, art and science
• Bloxels Game Builder kits cultivate imagination and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while encouraging discovery and experimentation
• LEGO WeDo kits will engage our students and their families with simple, easy-to-learn computer programming and robotics
• Dash Robot Launcher accessories will add more challenging programming options to our Dash Robots and allow students and their families to take their programming exploration to the next level
• CaseLogic backpacks will allow students to travel home without fear of damaging expensive technology
