Building Community in a Harlem Library

Help me give my students board and card games to build community in our library.

My Project

After the Covid-19 lockdown in NYC, our school is still recovering and getting back on our feet. Our library became a staging area for electronic devices and other gatherings, but little in the way of being a library for student use. And though it worked to support our students during lockdown, the library is transitioning back to a space where students can exercise their intellectual freedom and make lasting memories with their peers.

But now we're making the bold choice to reimagine and reinvest in our library!

Part of reimagining our library also includes thinking about it as a space for students (and staff) to build community. These board and card games run the gamut of traditional favorites (like Taboo, Uno, and chess), to new titles (like Exploding Kittens and Tacos vs. Burritos). A truly robust library program does more than house books for silent learning -- it needs to be a place where young minds can engage in formal and informal learning opportunities. With your help, we'll be able to do both!
