This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I truly love my young scholars in South Central, Los Angeles. Our school is located in a low income community where the majority of students qualify for free-lunch. The school has been on "lock down" on occasion due to violence in the neighborhood. There have been homicides near the school and many of the students hear gun shots near their homes. Regardless of their environment, my students are loving, caring, and kind and truly want to learn.

Coming back to school on campus this year, after learning online, has been an adjustment for them.

Many are experiencing a Covid Learning Gap along with family stresses due to economic hardship as well as grief from loved ones dying from Covid. At times they come to school feeling sad, worried. and depressed. I am always seeking new ways to encourage and inspire them to see their greatness.

I am so excited for this opportunity to ignite the spark within each child. With the power of creativity students can create inspirational, encouraging designs not only for themselves but to take home for family members too. We all need a little motivation and words of encouragement when times are tough.

My Project

Children are said to be resilient but how much do we expect from them without considering the impact it has on their well-being. Students living through a pandemic are having a challenging time coping with all the changes happening in their life.

Many students are struggling and have been affected mentally and emotionally.

The material we are requesting will have an immediate impact on the students in our class. With these creative tools students will build connection, collaboration and community. Lessons will include focusing on the positive traits with in themselves, their classmates, and family members. Students will then have the hands on experience of creating and designing their own stickers and decals with the color printer and Cricut tools for friends and family as a visual constant reminder of their brilliance. With the Cricut Heat Press, my students will be excited to also decorate their face masks that they are required to wear all day. With the items on our list the possibilities are endless in creating a positive mindset that will pour over into their academic success.
