My Students

Have you ever found a logic puzzle to be mind-challenging and befuddling? Have you ever felt the glorious sense of confidence and accomplishment when you successfully completed it? How great would it be to share this awesome feeling with my students?

I teach in an inner-city, urban public school where over 50% of the students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches, the basic measurement of poverty.

My students come to the classroom burdened with problems from home, and saddled with the history of a spotty educational experience thus far. I am often confronted with the question of how to teach basic logic and problem solving skills, when I am supposed to deliver a rigorous, college-prep curriculum. My students yearn for attention and an engaging learning experience, and I believe that I've found a way to deliver. I just need your help in getting the necessary materials into their hands.

My Project

I would like to obtain a set of 3D marble puzzles called Perplexus. I would like to provide my students with 3 rookie and basic level models, and 2 of the most challenging puzzles. These puzzles are not toys, but learning tools that challenge my students' spacial reasoning, logic, and problem-solving skills. After introducing them to my students, I will challenge them to create, then beat the shortest time to complete each puzzle at each level of difficulty, using stopwatches for documentation. A whiteboard or bulletin board will track best times, showcasing student achievement in a very supportive way. The certificates and trophies will be presented as each student reaches certain milestones.

Your kind contribution to this project will allow my students to have an opportunity to use a challenging, 3-D puzzle to improve their cognitive abilities.

This challenging learning tool will engage them in a friendly battle to see who can achieve the best time, and in the process, they will learn much more than just bragging rights.
