Building Character Through Collaboration

My Students

My 5th graders are high energy, clever, entertaining, hard-working and an eclectic group of students..

We are a Title I school with 98% free and reduced lunch, but we do not allow that label to define who we are or what we are capable of doing with limited resources, staff and supplies.

We have to be more creative to keep our students engaged and it requires great time and effort-of me, but I would not trade the joy I receive when my students make real-life connections!

My Project

“Learning best occurs through social participation” Wenger (2009). Our students are very social. They eagerly impart their knowledge to his/her peers getting feedback - negative or positive. This doesn't discourage them. However they will take a stance and prove or defend his/her position.

I desire that my students have the same level of engagement and discourse when they are working collectively and collaboratively on assignments.

The noise cancelling headphones would be a wonderful addition in our classroom as it can help easily distracted students become more focused as it can become noisy when we are engaged in small or large group discourse. In addition, the headphone splitters would allow students to work in small groups around a single computer without disturbing others. Finally, the computer stands would improve my 5th graders posture while working at the computer stations. The stands allow the laptops to be elevated and seen by all [in the group].
