Building Bright Minds: An Inclusive STEAM LEGO Experience

Help me give my students an inclusive, hands-on STEAM Lego elective and after-school club that goes beyond robotics, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to foster critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity while ensuring accessibility for all learners.

My Project

Hello! My name is Amara, and I’m a special education teacher in Hillsboro, Oregon. I’m excited to share an inspiring project aimed at launching a STEAM Lego elective and enhancing our after-school Lego club. This initiative will provide students with hands-on, creative experiences that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)—expanding beyond traditional lego robotics to encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Why This Matters

My students are curious, creative, and eager to explore, but they learn best when given the opportunity to engage with concepts in a hands-on, accessible way. By integrating Lego-based STEAM activities, I hope to create a space where all students, regardless of ability, can thrive, build confidence, and develop real-world skills in an inclusive learning environment.

Our Goals

This program will foster collaboration between general and special education students, allowing them to develop critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills while preparing for future academic and career opportunities in STEAM fields. Through co-teaching and inclusive lesson planning, I will work with a general education teacher to ensure all activities are accessible to students of varying abilities.

Example Lessons

Science: Build and test Lego cars to explore forces, motion, speed, and friction.

Engineering: Design and construct earthquake-resistant buildings or bridges.

Arts: Create stop-motion videos with Lego figures to tell stories.

My students deserve engaging, hands-on learning opportunities that support their unique strengths and needs. This project will provide a safe, supportive, and inspiring space where they can explore, create, and build confidence in STEAM disciplines. Additionally, it will foster empathy, collaboration, and a strong sense of community, bringing together students with diverse perspectives and strengths.

Thank you for your support! Your generosity will help us create an exciting, inclusive, and empowering learning experience for every student involved.
