Building Bridges

Help me give my students supplies needed (balsa wood, glue, toothpicks, gum drops) to build different types of bridge supports and then balsa wood bridges so they can apply math and science concepts to something real and fun!

My Project

I want my students to apply the knowledge they are learning in my math classes as well as in their science classes to a fun project they can relate to. The students will use gumdrops and toothpicks to first build different 3D shapes (triangular pyramids and cubes) and then discuss the pros and cons of each shape. Each group will build multiple supports and then see how many textbooks they can hold before failing. They will discuss several topics, including cost to build, shape, space, applications of different structures, etc. Part two of the project will then be to build a balsa wood bridge and perform load-bearing tests. Students will work in groups (building team skills) and will partner with a physics teacher for the discussion/planning phase.

Students will see a connection between the math and science concepts they are learning and the real world to answer that never-ending question - "when am I ever going to use this?".

I want my students to be excited to learn and come to class. My goal is for them to be actively applying what they are learning and doing hands-on activities.

Some of my classes have many students that struggle in math and with school in general. I want to make education more appealing and fun for them. I want to motivate them to come to school and participate actively in their education. Maybe even inspire them to want to strive for a particular career.
