My students need 4 flip video cameras to create digital stories about their lives as immigrant teens, showing that they are regular kids, just like American born teens.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being judged just because you had an accent, wore clothes that were slightly different, or practiced greetings that were not considered normal. My students, new immigrants to the US, face these challenges daily.
My students are new immigrants to the US.
They come from over 60 different countries and speak over 50 different languages. They are smart, sweet, respectful, kind, open-minded, and wise beyond their years.
I feel lucky to have the opportunity to work with my students. I learn so much from them, far more than I teach them.
Our school is a safe haven for immigrant students, but the world they live in is not. Just two years ago, a group of teens murdered an innocent man on Long Island, just because he was an immigrant.
Instead of being seen as inspired and inspiring young people who are here to better our country and their own lives, my students are often stigmatized, excluded, and misunderstood.
My Project
With these 4 cameras, I will attempt to build bridges between American born teens in part of New York and my students. We will create video diaries showing a day in the life of an immigrant teen, sharing it with these American born teens, to demonstrate just how similar life is for both groups. We will also have video teleconferences with the students, to further break the ice. In the end will have a celebration, going out to to visit the American teens and meet each other in person.
This project will open the eyes and hearts of those who haven't had a chance to get to know my incredible students as I have. It will also begin a process of healing in a part of NY that has been hurting ever since the murder.
This project will also help to empower my students, build their self-esteem as well as their skills as videographers.
If you support this project, you will be helping to fight for human rights.
Immigrant rights are human rights, and this project will help to empower a group that has been struggling to feel acceptance and equality in an ever-hostile environment.
Your support will help provide young people with the chance to tell their stories and bring new eyes into their world.
