My students need supplies for organizing and completing their work, math manipulatives and books that will aid, enhance, and make their learning experience enjoyable.
When a diamond in the rough has to go through it's transition, you never know exactly how the end result will look, but we do know that it does take multiple steps to get there. My students need those additional resources to equip/help them to reach their end result and "SHINE" like I know they can.
Somewhere along the way, there was a hole and the hole seems to keep getting bigger.
The hole is the gap that my students have when it comes to making the connection with comprehension. My students are mixed in race in which some are Vietnamese, Haitian-Creole, Cuban, and American. Most of them, their first language is not English and they are struggling with the transition of moving to a foreign place and learning a new language. Several of the parents have either been migrant workers or have experienced certain hardships (financially) and have been moving from place to place. My school is a Title I school where over 90% of them receive free or reduced lunches. The area is one where the parents are trying so hard to meet the basic needs of their kids (working and providing shelter and food) that they seldom have the time to work with them on their homework or even ask, "How was your day?" When the children come home from school, the older siblings are usually in charge.
My Project
With these resources, I will be able to afford the students additional practice with reading for various reasons: Modeling, fluency practice, and comprehension. The additional resources will assist with organizational skills for keeping track of their progress and monitoring. I believe that what a student does with his or her hands will have more of an impact on their learning process than just being taught.
I have also requested Math and Reading manipulatives which will make learning exciting. Most of the requested items will be utilized in small group instruction. They will be used in centers as well. The books w/cd in the listening center will provide modeling, fluency and assist with comprehension. The Activity cards will provide additional practice (in a small group) for a variety of skills aligned with the new Common Core. This will ensure and sharpen their comprehension skills. This will also peak their interest, making learning more enjoyable and assist in achievement.
This project is very important to me because I am passionate about what I do and it saddens me to see students who have missed certain skills in previous years now struggling to be achievers.
With the standards being set to meet our students' needs globally, it is making it very difficult for the students who are further behind just to make it to being proficient. With these tools, we can begin to close the gap and build the bridge that the students need so that they may successful in learning.
