My Project
As an educator of children with autism, I am committed to providing my students with the best possible opportunities to communicate and engage with the world around them. Many of my students are non-verbal or have limited verbal skills, and I am dedicated to creating a learning environment where they can develop their literacy skills and communication abilities.
Students with autism often struggle with language development, but literacy instruction can provide a pathway to greater communication.
By introducing phonics and letter recognition through multisensory materials, we can help students build phonemic awareness, a foundational skill for reading and communication. Additionally, these materials will foster social skills as students engage with their peers and educators in literacy-based activities.
The materials needed for this project will allow me to build a literacy-rich environment that meets the unique needs of my students. The following resources will be used to support their individual learning needs:
AlphaTales Learning Library Box Set: A set of engaging, interactive books that introduce phonics concepts through stories, allowing my students to connect sounds with letters in a fun and meaningful way.
Letters Pocket Chart: A hands-on tool to help develop a deeper understanding of letter-sound relationships and focus on one letter at a time to improve letter recognition, phonics, and early reading skills.
Recordable Buttons: These will be used to isolate individual phonemes and allow my students to practice and repeat sounds at their own pace, fostering phonemic awareness. These are also expressive language tools for non-verbal students during instruction.
Sandpaper Numbers and Letters: These tactile materials will engage my students' sense of touch, which is critical for reinforcing letter and number formation. The sensory aspect of the sandpaper letters will support both fine motor skills and letter recognition.
