My Project
"Stone Fox" by John Reynolds Gardiner is a heartwarming children's novel that follows the story of a young boy named Willy and his loyal dog, Searchlight. Set in a small town, the narrative unfolds as Willy enters a dogsled race, hoping to win the prize money to save his grandfather's farm from financial ruin. The formidable and mysterious Native American character, Stone Fox, becomes both an adversary and a figure of respect in the competition.
This book exposes students to rich vocabulary and allows them to practice language skills in a context that is both educational and enjoyable.
Stone Fox" is a well-suited literary choice for ELD students who have recently arrived in the country. Its combination of cultural relevance, accessible language, engaging storyline, and themes of perseverance makes it a valuable tool for language development and integration into a new academic and cultural environment. For long-term ELD students who may be struggling with reading at grade level, "Stone Fox" serves as a valuable tool to enhance literacy skills. The narrative structure and compelling storyline can motivate these students to actively engage with the text, thereby improving their reading comprehension and overall literacy proficiency.
The themes presented in "Stone Fox" encourage critical thinking and analysis. Through class discussions and activities related to the novel, students can develop higher-order thinking skills, essential for academic success in all subject areas. By supporting our initiative to acquire the "Stone Fox" book set, you will contribute to creating an inclusive and enriching learning environment for our ELD students. Your generosity will empower these students to overcome language barriers, build confidence in their abilities, and ultimately succeed academically.
