My Students
"Because I want to be ready to help my family, and other families who need help." This is a student response to the question--Why is education important to you? This encapsulates our students and who they are. They come from diverse backgrounds, diverse cultures, and diverse families who mean everything to them.
And they are ready to step up and take on the challenges of the future.
Our diverse student population comes from all over Minneapolis, the United States, and the world. Though they come from such different backgrounds--they find incredible ways to work together and have friendships that cross cultures, languages, and socio-economics.
My Project
Reyna Grande’s memoir, “The Distance Between Us beautifully captures the struggle that Reyna and her siblings endured while trying to assimilate to a different culture, language, and family life in El Otro Lado (The Other Side).”
We will be reading The Distance Between Us together in class to build empathy and a better understanding of people who are negotiating identity and their position in a new home.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and are global citizens who recognize the need for cross-cultural understanding in today’s world. Reyna Grande’s memoir will provide our class with a personal account of how difficult and important it can be to maintain one’s identity while in search of family and stability.
