Our school is a PBL Model School which means our teachers create projects that are authentic and have real world connection. “As a teacher I want to take my standards that I teach and create projects to teach those standards to my students”. I try to give my students a unique way of learning because a lot my students come to middle school 2 to 3 grade levels behind. I want my students to have access to text on a daily basis so they can read and enjoy reading.
My Project
So my students do not like to read for leisure and through a survey I learned that they don't feel that they can relate to some of the texts that are recurred for them to read. I choose to find a book that my students can relate to and use that text to guide our learning. The book Miracle Boys discusses the loss of parents, family being incarcerated, and trying to become successful with difficult circumstances.
My students and I will read this book together and I will teach my 6th grade standards using this book.
Afterwards, we will create a brochure to tell the story of our school. A lot of community leaders do not believe in our students and their abilities and I want to prove them wrong. Our brochures will show how we will build bridges with our school and community. This will allow my students to show what they know and their potential no matter what the circumstances. I need a classroom set of books so students can read and take home the book to practice their reading and writing skills.
