Building Blocks - Special Ed

My Students

We are one of the largest elementary schools in the area, serving over 550 students with a very diverse population. We cater to an on-site autism program that consists of two classrooms with students from kindergarten through 5th grade. We work with many low-income families in our community, serving breakfast and lunch to over 80% of our school through district-funded programs.

Our aim is to provide every student the opportunity to continue to grow and learn while at home through providing an engaging, fun curriculum.

Through this, every student is able to learn about health and physical education, gaining knowledge they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Through our curriculum, we strive to help every student reach their full potential, enjoying physical activities and using a variety of resources to improve not only their skills but also their growth as individuals through sports. This is also something we hope the students can achieve during their PE lessons as well as recess time.

My Project

We currently cater to an on campus autism program with students from kindergarten through to 5th grade. So far this year our students have used basic sports equipment. It is our goal to provide them with stimulating and engaging equipment and environments within PE. This equipment will be perfect to cater to our autism students in order to stimulate their senses through sports and physical activity. These students are so intriguingly intelligent in so many areas and a variety of equipment and stimulus within the PE classroom helps to cater to each individuals students needs. Their current favorites are balloons, racing cars, scooters and any ball that has additional sensory surfaces. These building blocks would open the opportunity to build and work together while being physically active.
