Building Blocks of Reading

My students need file folder games, puzzles, a magnetic activity center, and write & wripe cards to help develop their early literacy skills.

My Students

Are beginning ESOL readers. As a beginning reader, they need to think about the sounds that letters (or groups of letters) make, new vocabulary words, word endings, and new vocabulary words. All of this must come together to successfully read a book.

I work with ESOL students from a variety of backgrounds.

Many are born in the United States. They often start school with a limited English vocabulary and letter sound knowledge. This makes it challenging for them to learn how to read. They are not able to take full advantage of the picture support that many easy to read books have.

My Project

I will use the File folder vocabulary games and magnetic centers to help build my students vocabulary knowledge and introduce grade level skills such as prefixes and suffixes. The phonemic awareness match ups will help students hear the variety of sounds in English words. The sight word practice cards and puzzles will help students increase their knowledge of sight words. When students have strong knowledge of sight words they are able to focus on decoding more difficult words and understanding what they are reading.

These reading games and activities will help my ESOL students who are just learning how to read get a strong foundation.

This will aid them for years to come when the texts they are expected to read become more complex and their focus needs to shift more to comprehension (understanding what they are reading).
