Building Blocks of Engineering Design

My Students

The STEM lab is a place to start the engineering process. The students love a design challenge. Although technology is great, the students love low technology design challenges such as Legos and magnet tiles. The materials that I have chosen are an alternative to technology games and coding. The engineering design process starts with ideas and peaks with the finished design structure. Students love it when they have fun exciting materials with endless possibilities.

My students are deeply enthralled with the next-generation science standards.

We explore plant cells and growing plants. We explore animal cells and microorganisms. The lifecycle is brought to life with the butterfly kit. The anticipation level is extremely high when the opportunity to examine the lifecycle of the butterfly is a concrete experience. My students need to step away from TVs, computers, and cell phones to experience crosscutting science lessons and activities

My Project

Students love to build with blocks. We are going to use our blocks as the foundation of the Engineering Design Process. The skill of creativity and critical thinking requires patience. The level of communication and collaboration is a lifelong skill that students can develop with engineering design challenges. Students love Minecraft and Roblox but basic building materials can lengthen attention spans.

Students can choose their materials.

I chose safe and accessible blocks that are user-friendly. STEM lab is where we will put Engineering in STEM. Of course, the butterfly kits are for the Life Science integration in STEM. The STEM bins are ready but they are empty. Engineering Challenges await us with these great items
