Building Blocks and Building Language With Magnetic Tiles

Help me give my students magnetic tiles, mini magnetic tiles, and action figures for sparking creativity and building new skills for their language and literacy development.

My Project

My students are growing and learning about their unique intersectional identities. This includes different languages, cultures, countries, preferences, perspectives, and values. They do all share one common bond - they are all deaf or hard of hearing and part of the Deaf community. We empower our students as Deaf individuals to be lifelong learners and innovative thinkers with diverse linguistic, ethnic, and cultural identities who are fluent in both American Sign Language and English. In my role as the spoken language and literacy specialist, I work with my students to bridge between American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Part of our spoken language bi-literacy curriculum is focused on phonics instruction to help build connections for students through language and vocabulary.

Students will use these magnetic tiles daily in phonics lessons to build, segment, sound out and write words, in storytelling to create and retell narratives, and in free play to create and build using their imaginations!

Magnetic tiles can help students build language and vocabulary in describing shapes, colors, and structures. In storytelling, students can create settings and characters with the tiles. Tiles help with following directions by listening and building based on instructions. Using manipulatives increases spatial reasoning in understanding prepositions and positional words. Building projects develop collaborative language in students working together to build and discuss ideas.
