Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is nothing like seeing a preschooler totally engaged in block play. Most preschoolers build rocket ships and entire cities. My preschoolers with autism are learning creativity. They need big blocks to provide them with sensory, visual, and tactile stimulation to totally engage in play.
Presently I teach in a large inner city elementary school in California.
The students in my class live in a crime and gang infested area that is high in poverty. The entire student body receives free lunch. I currently work in a special education classroom (primarily autism) and I integrate my students with general education preschoolers. I teach some of the most sweetest and kind hearted students. These children deserve a classroom enriched with materials that will help them develop skills for success in life.
My Project
One of my favorite quotes by Brian Littrell is "Shoot for the moon". That is the mind set that I am trying to teach my preschoolers. I believe that preschoolers should sing loud, play hard and dream/build big. It is hard to dream/build big in my preschool class because there are no large blocks. I dream of building a block center that is well stocked and organized where my students can learn cooperative play by building together as well as conflict resolution as conflicts arise.
Block play is very important at this stage. Block play helps develop concepts of numbers, size, shapes, and weight. It also helps them improve their social skills, language development and self-confidence. My students need Easy-Build Bricks that are easy to hold and manipulate for easy building. The Soft Unit Blocks are needed because they come in a variety of shapes that will get my students creative juices flowing. The Giant Polydron Builders will help my students learn problem solving and learn dexterity.
When I close my eyes and imagine the completion of this project, I can see my students little face lit up with joy.
These blocks will impact my students in so many ways.
The blocks will help them learn persistence, problem solving techniques, assist them in developing social skills, aid in building imagination, reinforce concepts, and personal satisfaction. My students need these blocks to learn how to play with purpose as they dream/build big.
