This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Strong literacy skills in a child’s first language lay the groundwork for success in English. Help me provide Spanish-language books for my elementary ELD students—engaging read-alouds for the classroom, take-home books for family reading, and more advanced texts for older newcomers. These books will support language development at home and school, helping students become confident, capable bilingual readers.
My goal is to send 3+ books home with each of my kindergarten students next year to encourage reading at home.
Research shows that developing reading skills in a child’s first language supports overall language growth and transfers to English literacy, and that the amount of time children spend reading/being read to at home greatly affects their literacy skills in school. With your support, we can create a literacy-rich environment that values students' cultural and linguistic identities while preparing them for academic success in both Spanish and English.
