Building Better Thinkers

My students need 5 different building materials, such as bristle blocks, geo builders and creature builders.

I teach in an inner-city school. I have the joy of working with 20 lively kindergartners.

Enough with the game-boys and PSPs!! Remember the fun we used to have as children? Playing jacks or board games? Drawing with sidewalk chalk? Building with Lincoln logs or Legos? All those things that inspire imagination and creativity seem to be a thing of the past. Our school's data shows that our students are performing low in areas such as comprehension and problem solving. If we are going to successfully educate our students, we need to address these areas.

Teaching a student how to read is easy, but teaching thinking is another thing altogether. Kindergartners learn through play, so I would like to be able to provide meaningful tools that inspire creativity and allow them to learn critical thinking skills as they "play". Imagine the creativity and the problem-solving that would be taking place!

All I need to accomplish this goal are a variety of blocks and manipulatives that students can use in small groups. By providing these supplies, you will make it possible for my students to become creative thinkers. A little bit of play will go a long way in developing students who are ready to face the challenges that their future will hold.
