Building Better Teachers with Book Studies

I need professional development books to conduct district-wide book studies to support the needs of our students.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Miller's classroom raised $835

My Project

I serve on a mentoring and induction team that plans and provides professional development to teachers new to our district. Our team is always looking for new and innovative ways to help our new teachers and the mentors who are paired with them. Our goal is to support them through meaningful and thought-provoking professional development. We would like to offer this type of professional development through book studies. We conducted a survey to determine interest level and possible book choices. Based on the results, we are writing this grant to purchase multiple copies of three books that we plan to use with our new teachers and their mentors. These book studies will also be open to veteran teachers in the district who are interested in this growth opportunity. Participating teachers will meet monthly to discuss topics and concepts from the books. We will use the information gleaned from the books and the shared conversations to positively impact our teaching practices and our students.

Collaborating with colleagues and sharing the information in these books will foster a more effective and connected community of teachers and learners.

Many of the students we teach and interact with daily come to us from a place of trauma. It is imperative that our teachers have an understanding of trauma and its implications for student learning. The books we have chosen highlight ways that teachers can maintain high expectations while validating and being sensitive to our students’ needs. The meaningful discussions that can come from sharing and connecting those ideas with real-life experiences can have a significant impact on our teaching and learning community.
