Building Beats With Synths

Help me give my students an OP-Z Portable Wireless 16-Track Synthesizer to help them create their own music.

My Students

My school has a very diverse group of students ranging from your typical suburban middle kids to students whose families are not as mobile. Much of this diversity comes from the neighborhood around my school that is made up of single-family homes and various apartments around our school. At the same time, my school is open to transfers from around the city, giving students who are not from the neighborhood a chance to come to my school as well.

All of these different components have created a dynamic in my classroom where students are given the chance to learn from one another, as well as be exposed to lots of different cultural values.

It has also created a classroom with many students who do not have many of the same opportunities ​outside of school activities to learn and grow.

My Project

I teach an after-school DJ and Music Production Club, where I work with my students teaching them how to produce their very own beats, and give them opportunities to share their songs with the world using the website Soundcloud. The program gives my students a chance to find their own voice, and build confidence as they develop music​ production skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.

With a Teenage Engineering OP-Z, my students can further their musical production skills by learning the science of synthesizers, learning to how to sequence music, and even bringing in an aspect of video production to accompany their music.

The OP-Z could also be used as a live performance tool for my students, giving them a chance to get up in front of their peers in school events, playing their music live!

All of these things would help students grow not only musically, but also socially and emotionally, giving them a positive reason to stand out at school!
