Building Atomic Models at Home!!

Help me give my students atomic model kits to work through modeling for the Biochem Unit!

My Students

The last three months have been devastating for some many people around the country, but especially for our school community. Due to our student population and the many multi-generational households of students we have been particularly impacted by COVID. Students are grappling with lost family members, the fear that they may brought the virus into their households and the burden of suddenly having to learn remotely - sometimes while taking care of their younger siblings and sharing computers.

Due to the fluctuation in the NYC COVID numbers we currently do not know where the students will be learning in the fall - though some HYBRID model is likely , with students in the building part of the time and remote learning the rest of the time.

This will be a particularly difficult time for 9th graders as they transition from middle school to high school on top of the new academic rigor of our school. This is why I would like to send the students individual atomic modeling kits. Biochem is always one of the most difficult units of the fall, and for students to be able to have manipulatives at home would make all the difference to their learning!

My Project

Biochem is such an abstract topic, especially for 14 year old students just adjusting to high school! With these materials I will be able to mail home enough supplies for my students to create the molecules at home that we will be talking about in class - whether we are in the building or learning remotely!

With your help the AP Bio freshman will be able to build individual amino acids and then link them together to form the polypeptide chain of the proteins or model the different ways that glucose molecules can be combined to form polysaccharides.

Hands-on experiences like this help students to process and understand complex subjects! I would hate for my classes this year to be denied this opportunity due to remote learning.
