Building and Programming VEX Robots With TEAM 288D

My students need a laptop computer for building and programming VEX robots.

My Students

Students must learn to work and function in a technological society. Our students advance their educations by learning about cool technologies and gaining experiences that most students must wait until college to have. This includes working in small teams of students to build VEX robots!

The 80 students on our robotics team are an excellent cross-section of our school.

Our high school is a suburban, Michigan school of about 1800 students. In the robotics program, we effectively serve many types of students from high achieving honors students, to high achieving special education students.

Many of these students have left us to attend prestigious colleges and have gone on to interesting and rewarding STEM careers. During the past three years, we graduated 35 seniors from the program. These graduates accumulated combined offers of $1,000,000 in scholarships. In their time with us, our students develop skills that few high school students achieve before college.

My Project

The laptop computer we are requesting is essential to allow our student teams to build and program their VEX robots. Building, programming and competing with these robots will give our students a beginning understanding of robotic systems. Our students will learn how the math and science they have learned in class may be applied to real robotic tasks.

The Next Generation Science Standards being adopted across the country mandate the connection between science and practical engineering tasks and practices.

This experience forges these connections in exciting and academically rigorous ways.

It has been long understood that our students need to leave high school with a high degree of competence in mathematics and science, however, that is no longer enough. They will also need to understand the connection between these concepts and the real world. Robotics provides the vehicle to foster that understanding. By helping to provide the resource of a laptop computer, you will be furthering that goal.
